I really had my sights set on visiting Beirut, Lebanon this year (for the week proceeding Easter), and up until a few weeks before I was still checking flights and crossing my fingers that it would be possible. However, with unrest at an all time high, it was probably best to curb my wanderlust for the Middle East and keep things somewhat local and simple. No shawarma, kibbi, or shish tawook I told myself. With international flights anywhere prohibitively expensive this late in the game, I settled on an old standby. Oahu. No stress, worries or planning. Just warm sand, sunny beaches, and lazy days. And of course, ono kine grinds. I’m so there.
I originally planned to do a short entry on the trip, but ended up with way too many photos of the hotel we stayed at, the Waikiki EDITION, so I’ll show you those first. A collaboration between hotelier Ian Schrager and Marriott, the EDITION hotels are the mega chain’s first entry into the luxury boutique market. Opened in late 2010, the Waikiki EDITION features a beautiful palette of crisp whites and soft-toned woods, with lush greenery and subtle pops of color throughout. As far as I know, it’s is the only contemporary boutique hotel option on the island, and it does a great job of filling the void. Enjoy the photos!

This hotel looks great. I like its decor — reminds me of Oceana Hotel in Santa Monica. Its location is great, too (Close to Ala Moana Center!) Thank you for the wonderful photos.
brings back great memories. lots of sunshine and delicious eats.
Wow, that looks amazing! I went to Oahu last year and I have been itching to go back. We stayed at the Marriot last time, which was nice, but this looks way better! Will definitely look into this hotel for the next trip, thanks
PS. What part of the island is it on?
Yeah ! I wish i could go to Hawaii once in my life !!! Rick, i guess there will be some food shots on the second part ? lol
Gorgeous photographs. I want to go so bad, thanks for making me super jealous eheh.
janae, it’s in waikiki fairly close to the ala moana center.
What a great place and perfect representation of it with your pictures. I especially love the patterns from the first few pictures.
What a great set of pics, Rick! I don’t know if I could pick one as my favorite — they’re all awesome. Also, very daring, bringing your camera right up to the edge of the pool and looking down — I’d be way to scared of dropping it!
I’m so glad the Saveur list led me here– i LOVE your photos and all the incredible places you’ve travelled to! Transports me…

I find your photos so awe inspiring. Thank you for sharing.
Stunning photos (as usual…)!
Congrats on the Saveur list as well, Rick! Well deserved!
That rotating shelf is so awesome. What beautiful photos of the hotel- maybe I’ll head over to get some drinks at the bar one of these days!
I hope you got some good eating in while you were here- some of my faves are Downtown @HiSAM, Nico’s Pier 38, Alan Wong’s (both the main restaurant and the less expensive Pineapple Room) and either Yama’s Fish Market or Ono’s for Hawaiian.
Another stellar batch of photos; great job! I like how you captured the modern and cultural detail of the hotel. The pool shots blew me away; love the colors in those.
Looks like a wonderful trip. Lebanon sounds great too; maybe next year!
beautiful as always I have been dying to get to Hawaii, sigh one day..
I just found your blog through Honey & Jam. I am in love with your style and photography skills! Your style is so clean and unprocessed. You are now my photography inspiration.
Could you share with me how you process them?
GREAT SET! Great photos as always! Now booking my tickets to HI!
jacqueline, i was scared of dropping it!
cate, thanks for sharing your faves. we did hit up the last 3 on your list
shannon, the processing is just using curves, saturation, and hue adjustments (at times) in photoshop to get the look i want.
Rick, wow. These photos are breathtaking, better than the photos on the hotel’s own website. You can definitely feel the vibe of the place through your shots.
incredible shots! makes me want to book a flight immediately!
It is one of kind trip! So delicious looking and excellent on fun! I’m happy for you guys! I can’t stop myself from scrolling all over again your post! You make me dreaming when I’m awake.

I lived in Hawaii for the past 5 years and have recently had to move away and I can honestly say you have captured the spirit of Oahu in your photos. Absolutely stunning.
