I’m sure everyone who loves photography, at some point gets a bit burnt out. I have to admit I’m one of them. It seems like the more we chase after the newest quadrillion megapixel camera and become increasingly bogged down by post processing those ridiculously cumbersome files that we somehow lose that fervor and passion we had at the beginning. You know, when times were simpler, and all we wanted to do was shoot everything that caught our eye? If you haven’t already noticed, I’ve been a bit addicted to Instagram. The spontaneity that it cultivates has really brought back a little bit of that lost passion, and I find myself excited to shoot and share the things I see. Kind of like the old days.
On the same note, traveling with an SLR, lenses, and such has become more of a hindrance. I don’t have those 2o year old shoulders anymore, and whipping out a big heavy camera every time I see something interesting isn’t really my idea of spontaneity. When I spent a week in beautiful Maui last week, I did pack my trusty 5D with a sparse three lens kit. But I already knew it was a lost cause. Instagram and my iPhone had already ruined it for me. The 5D never made it out of the bag.
This was my first true test of iPhone-only travel photography. To be honest, I rather enjoyed it. The freedom of shooting with such an small device, plus the ability to instantly post process and share was really refreshing. The lower-tech nature of the iPhone also forced me to be more resourceful and contemplative of each photograph; in subject matter, composition, etc. I think the results were pretty good, what do you think?
(find me at @rick_poon on Instagram or you can check out my statigram feed here!)
P.S. I know some of you will ask, so I’ll mention it here: all photos were shot with an iPhone 4s and processed using a combination of snapseed and vscocam, the collages done off camera in PS.

amazing. seriously.
Hi Rick,
The pictures are beautiful as usual. Actually, each pic coming from your eyes is beautiful.
I am happy to know your thoughts. I do have have these feelings and miss the old days when I traveled with just a point&shoot camera… i didn’t have to hesitate on which lens to take with me or change them on the floor during the visits and keep my friends waiting.
I have just discovered Instagram. It’s very nice.
Or may be another option ? Shooting film. I am sure you’re gonna make even more gorgeous pics ok, it’s not free, you can’t do it everytime but the excitation when waiting for the results just reminds the very old day.
They are gorgeous! I would never have known unless you fessed up!? Proving once again, it doesn’t matter what you shoot with.
This is great and inspiring post. Pictures are really, really nice. And I think that it is dosen’t matter which kind of tools you gonna use to show people what is in your heart and how you see the reality around you. The thing is, that it should work. And it works. Definitely. Cheers
I didn’t even realise they were iPhone photos! It’s all whoever is behind the camera Crazy awesome photos as always.
I totally agree! If only they could make the 5d and all the lenses less than 1lb it would be way easier! The shots look lovely though – it doesn’t matter what your tool is, you’ve got an amazing eye.
bora, thank you dear
steve, it’s great to hear from you, and thanks for the comments. my good friend gordon is always bugging me to shoot film, but knowing me the film would never get developed! btw, we were in paris for a couple of days a few months ago, totally slipped my mind you live over there. would have been nice to meet up!
thanks mira, marta, shannon, jennifer! jennifer, the new olympus om-d looks promising. my friend has one and it’s super tiny!
wow, was that the trip? oh to see the whole world through rick’s eyes… it must always be so beautiful. i second bora… amazing. seriously.
Fantastic photos!! I was about to buy full frame camera and now, I have to think again..I believe the most important thing for photos is how you see world once again.
Such a lovely story told with the incredible pictures!
you are allow to take a break… take some time off, observe with your real eyes, let your skin to feel the breeze, absorb everything with your heart, and enjoy the moment with the person next to you. =)
happy travel!
I completly agree with you. I live on Maui and am also addicted to instagram. That’s how I found you. I am traveling to Italy and I’m thinking of only bringing my iPhone. My husband thinks im crazy. Im glad to hear I’m not the only who enjoys the spontaneity of the iPhone and instagram. your photos are gorgeous by the way! Thank you for sharing.
Loved following your trip in HI. I’m with you on travelling with cameras. I dont take my 5D anywhere. Usually its the gx-1 and my iphone!
Rick … these gorgeous instagrams have your signature style written all over. Love how you see things!
Oh and thanks for pointing me to those cool photo processing apps. Been using snapseed quite a bit ever since!
Any and every photo of yours grabs my eyes and speaks to my heart. I thank you for sharing your gifts.
And… I have a question. Did you eat that durian?
Those are some amazing Iphone shots. Really shows that it doesn’t matter what camera you use if you’ve got a good eye. This definitely makes me want to up my iphone photo game.
Hey I love your Hawaii photos…I am going for my honeymoon and was wondering if you could mention where you went in this pics, they are spectacular…I loved your pics of the North Shore and bookmarked all those places but was interested in knowing some spots in Maui..if you can give me some leads it would be awesome. Thanks!!
This post was so timely for me. I’m feeling burn-out and uninspired. I haven’t lifted my dSLR for over 2 weeks. This post has inspired me, though, again. Beautiful photos of my favorite place! Thanks.
Your beautiful pictures make me miss Maui sooo sooo much. Thanks for sharing!
You’re such a talented guy. I completely relate to the “spontaneity” you’re talking about –even more when I am travelling and don’t want/ feel to shoot with my big DSLR… Actually, it’s the only reason I miss having an Iphone (and use instagram!)
How absolutely fun to have the freedom to shoot with the cumbersome-ness of the big DSLRs. I love it when I can sneak away and use my big Canon. With family, though, it does appear intrusive to have what my kids call “El Diablo” travel with us. You have a certain talent with Instagram and your iphone…I hope someday I can be as talented…
Excellent photos! Four photos into your list and I was thinking they had the vscocam vibe, hahah. Love that app.
I have the same problem, and I’ve since sold off my DSLR and stuck to an Olympus PEN + the iPhone. There’s no pressure when travelling!!
I love your pictures, they are so colourful… looking at your post brings me a taste of summer vacation !
I love so much your pictures ! My prefere is this with the rainbow, beautiful !
i could not agree more. you couldn’t have said it any better – that is exactly how i feel about the invention of iphones and instagram. a lot of times my 5D doesn’t get TLC either because of it, so it’s a sort of win-lose combination and sometimes i feel torn. there is just something so liberating about using such a small device to get such awesome photos. you did an incredible job, per usual. i lived on oahu for a couple years – i yearn for hawaii every day. glad you had such a fun trip.
wow, these images are gorgeous! When you have such a good eye for great composition, sometimes it just doesn’t matter what you are using to get those images.
Hawaii?
Ah, your captures are amazing!! I especially loved seeing the spam and jack fruit.
Your blog is amazing too and I’m following you on Twitter =)
I’m from Oahu but used to travel to Maui several times a year where my parents windsurfed, and I find your pictures absolutely authentic and stunning (what! with an iphone?). I’m usually not too homesick here in Paris, but you just made me!
Beautiful, just beautiful photos. I totally agree with you about taking pictures with the iphone.
I think it’s about intimacy with the scene you are trying to capture. If you put a DSLR in front of your face to take a shot you lose it, you have to find the right aperture and the right focus and you whatever feeling you had for the scene in front of you is gone; with the iphone, all you gotta do is touch, slide and shoot.
Nevertheless, with or without the iphone, your captures are absolutely wonderful!
wow! great pictures! Could you tell me what apps do you use please? Thanks=)
sorry I’ve just seen the”P.s”~thank you
every one of these images is mouthwatering – i want to jump in. the not-so-touristic side of hawaii is definitely on my list…
wow.
have been a fan before but haven’t looked at a lot of blogs/sites lately…
when i first say these, i thought, hmmm…i should get a “real” camera one day (i work in the photo industry as a stylist)…
my iphone is old and i don’t get this quality but it is a true inspiration since i don’t like to carry a camera either.
beautiful work.
Wow. Your mom pointed me to your site. I’m amazed and totally inspired at your images with the iPhone (4s even!)
Really…. Wow. You truly touched on a subject that is real to me so often. I never get the time to shoot for me. The fact that we travel to HI very often and that Maui is our place REALLY hit home to me. You know you know your a true artist when you can shoot with anything and it looks amazing. That you are! I felt like I was there again.
It was great meeting you and your beautiful wife last weekend.
I hope you enjoy my work on the other side of the lens!
I will be visiting your site often… You truly are amazing.
always taught me that the important thing was not good and expensive that it was the camera or lens, if not the photographer’s eye … There are people still get mediocre photos fantastic cameras and other simple cameras that do a great pictures. You up with a black box would make amazing photos. All seem special. Excuse my english, is very bad.
Just came across your blog… love!!!

I found myself in the same situation; shooting w/ my iPhone and leaving my DSLR kit in the bag. However, I would see a noticeable decrease in quality when viewing photos off the phone at larger sizes or if I wanted prints, so I traded my DSLR for a mirrorless and never looked back. It’s still small and light enough to travel w/ in my pocket, yet, for my purposes, takes every bit as good photos as my DLSR did. These days high-powered DSLR’s are overkill for all but the most professional photographer.
You can read a similar post about my switch to the Olympus E-P5 mirrorless camera on my site http://alexdeckard.com/olympus-e-p5/
I love these! And I completely agree that I get a little fatigued with photography from time to time. After 6 weeks travelling alone in SE Asia, when I got back my camera and I had to have a ‘little break’ .
But we’re back together now Inseparable almost.
hi Rick,
First of all, I love every shots you’ve taken here. It’s very beautiful and tells a story. I kinda agree about photo shooting technology thing you mention here. Yea, we do want to shoot everything that caught our eyes but taking out the SLR was a bit “waste of time” -sometime and to be true, I do missed out the perfect timing of some subject I wanted to shoot. So, the thing I learned as a photographer is that, no matter what kinds of tech you using (dslr, phone and such) the important thing is that, as long as you know the best angle for the subject and you’re able to fine the most suitable filter for it- you’re doing great and complete. I used phone most of the time and vsco too was my best choice to filter out all my photos. It turns out great but yours are the best here. You gave me some inspiration. Thank you and God bless. Love from Borneo island.
